Tallinn: Explore Local Life Tour
We created this tour for those who have already visited Tallinn's main tourist attractions and want to learn more, or for those who simply want to see what life is like in Tallinn. We will take you to four residential areas, each with its own history, architecture and way of life, from peaceful gardens and Soviet nostalgia to creative energy and sleek urban renewal. You will visit a local farmers market and cozy cafe in the charming wooden neighborhood.
Our first stop is Nõmme which is often called Tallinn’s “garden city.” The atmosphere here is tranquil and almost village-like. Here, you’ll find small local cafes, old railway station, and parks perfect for leisurely strolls. We will walk along the streets lined with 1920s- and 30s-era houses, private gardens and tall pine trees, and visit the local farmers' market.
Next, we will visit Mustamäe. In stark contrast to Nõmme, Mustamäe is defined by its Soviet-era architecture and functional urban planning. Mustamäe streets are lined with blocks of utilitarian apartment buildings—practical and uniform—which tell the story of Estonia’s recent history under Soviet rule. What was life like then and how do people live here today?
Moving closer to the sea, we will visit Kalamaja, one of Tallinn’s trendiest districts. It features charming pastel-colored wooden houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, once home to factory workers. Here, abandoned factories have been transformed into galleries, cafes, and design shops. Here we will take a coffee break and enjoy pastries from the local bakery.
Our final stop is Noblessner, a former submarine shipyard and now Tallinn's most modern and upscale waterfront development. Here, you'll enjoy the cutting-edge design of new apartment buildings and panoramic sea views.
